I hate running with a passion – 5 alternatives to summer cardio building!

I’m no fan of running. It feels like my lungs are about to explode, and this burning sensation never leaves, no matter how fit I am. But oddly, I can cycle, jump rope, or swim for ages without any issue.

About two years ago, I tried to get in shape with a 30-minute jog every day, but it was pure agony. I thought it might be because I used to smoke, but it didn’t get any easier. After just three weeks, I gave up and turned to biking.

However, recently, I had a wake-up call. Turning 30, my doctor told me I had high cholesterol, which was surprising given I’m only 195 pounds and fairly fit. But then I realized my eating habits were terrible. With summer approaching and my family in mind, I decided it was time to make a change.

If you’re like me and hate running, here’s a list of alternatives to help you get fit.

Number 1

Cycling

  • Burn approximately 266 cal/hr or more depending on intensity.
  • Cycling quickly became my go-to when I first ventured into photography. Without a car to reach my desired city spots, I embraced biking. Spending 3-4 hours exploring, with pit stops to capture intriguing photos, was pure bliss.
  • The post-ride sensation was unparalleled—sore but invigorated. Opting for a few weekly biking sessions beats the monotony of daily 30-minute runs, hands down!

Number 2

Swimming

  • Burn roughly 443 cal/hr or more based on intensity.
  • Swimming holds a special place in my heart. It’s a workout that never disappoints. Even walking in waist-deep water leaves you slightly winded, and that’s just the start.
  • Besides being low-impact, swimming is a blessing for those nursing injuries or joint concerns. The efficient use of oxygen, honed by holding your breath underwater, is remarkable. Competitive swimmers boast some of the best lung capacity around.
  • For me, the choice is clear: 30 minutes of swimming laps at the YMCA beats a 30-minute run any day!

Number 3

Skipping rope…

  • Burn around 620 cal/hr or more depending on intensity.
  • My relationship with jumping rope has evolved. From despising it during my young skating days to embracing it in Muay Thai training, I’ve come a long way.
  • Skipping rope isn’t just a calorie-burner; it’s a full-body strengthener. It targets legs, butt, shoulders, and arms, enhancing agility and foot muscles. Once you master rope tricks, the workout becomes even more diverse.
  • Keeping a rope handy pays off; those spontaneous skipping sessions add up. Fun fact: boxers use it to stay nimble on their feet.
  • Personally, I’d gladly spend 10 minutes skipping rope in my cozy kitchen over a 30-minute treadmill run at the gym any time!

Number 4

Hiking…

  • Burn approximately 443 cal/hr or more based on intensity.
  • Nature beckons, and I answer the call. Summer for me means embracing the great outdoors, reminiscent of my childhood days spent at the cabin and by the lakeshores.
  • Even in the prairies, opportunities for hiking abound. Most cities offer nature parks with hilly terrain. Whether I’m accompanied by family or my faithful canine companion, embarking on hour-long hikes never fails to challenge my leg muscles.
  • It’s akin to a scenic stair-climbing workout, and I wouldn’t trade it for a run any day!

Number 5

Paddling…

  • Burn around 177 cal/hr or more depending on intensity.
  • Paddling isn’t just an exercise; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. Whether in a canoe, kayak, or paddleboat, the tranquil waters beckon.
  • In cities blessed with flowing rivers, paddle clubs and rental services are often just a call away. Paddling tests your upper body strength and cardio, leaving you pleasantly sore.
  • Don’t forget to pack your camera; the water offers captivating shots waiting to be captured! When faced with the choice between running a mile and embarking on a serene paddling journey, my decision is clear—it’s time to paddle away and savor every moment!

In Conclusion

So there you have it, five fantastic alternatives to running for those of us who detest it as much as I do. Just to give you an idea, even something as simple as running after kids burns a minimum of around 159 calories per hour. Personally, I prefer activities like paddling, which burns around 177 calories an hour, and I genuinely enjoy doing. Why subject yourself to something you despise when there are enjoyable options that burn even more calories? It’s time to make fitness fun!
