5 Budget-Friendly Tips to Protect Your Digital Privacy

Digital Privacy

As a graduate student in network security, I understand the importance of personal privacy in our increasingly digital world. Every day, our devices collect, store, and share vast amounts of personal information. Protecting this data is crucial, not just for security professionals like myself, but for everyone. Here are five effective and affordable ways to safeguard your digital privacy.

1. USE STRONG, UNIQUE PASSWORDS

Protect your privacy by using strong, unique passwords for each account. Avoid simple passwords like “123456” or “password.” Instead, create complex passwords with a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters. Consider using a password manager for secure storage.

Operating system-based password managers, such as Apple’s iCloud Keychain and Windows Credential Manager, offer more security than browser-based ones like Chrome’s. These managers integrate seamlessly across devices.

If you use Chrome on a MacBook, note that it’s less secure than iCloud Keychain. For maximum security, use the built-in password manager of your operating system. Android users can rely on Google Password Manager for robust protection.

Side Note: Weak passwords can be cracked in minutes or hours. However, a strong password consisting of 12 characters chosen from a set of 94 possible characters (including uppercase and lowercase letters, digits, and special characters) could take approximately 34,000 years to crack with a brute-force attack using modern high-performance computing technology. This time may vary based on the actual computational power used and any potential advances in technology, making strong passwords a crucial defence  .

2. ENABLE TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION (2FA)

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring not just a password but also a second form of verification, such as a text message code or an authentication app. Many online services, including email providers and social media platforms, offer 2FA. Enabling this feature makes it significantly harder for hackers to gain access to your accounts, even if they have your password.

However, SMS-based 2FA is considered less secure due to vulnerabilities in text messaging. For better protection, use an authentication app or device-based 2FA. Some of the most secure and free options include Google Authenticator, Authy, and Microsoft Authenticator .

3. KEEP YOUR SOFTWARE UP TO DATE

Regularly updating your software is crucial for protecting your devices from the latest security threats. This includes your operating system, web browsers, and any apps you use. Most software updates include patches for security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. Turn on automatic updates whenever possible to ensure you’re always protected.

The best option is to turn on automatic updates. Security threats can emerge rapidly, and operating systems and applications often receive regular patches to address these vulnerabilities. Enabling automatic updates is recommended unless you have specific reasons for development or work/personal concerns .

4. USE A VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK (VPN)

A VPN encrypts your internet connection, making it difficult for anyone to spy on your online activities. This is especially important when using public Wi-Fi networks, which are often less secure. While many VPN services require a subscription, there are budget-friendly options available. Services like ProtonVPN and Windscribe offer free plans with limited data that can be sufficient for basic use .

Side Note: Using a VPN does not make you completely anonymous. Authorities can still access your data, and some VPN services may cooperate with them. Always research your VPN provider’s privacy policies and practices .

5. BE CAUTIOUS WITH PERSONAL INFORMATION

Think twice before sharing personal information online. Be mindful of the details you post on social media, and adjust your privacy settings to limit who can see your posts. Additionally, be wary of phishing attempts—scams designed to trick you into providing personal information. Always verify the authenticity of emails, messages, or websites before entering sensitive data  .

BONUS TIP: DON’T CLICK ON SUSPICIOUS EMAILS OR OPEN UNKNOWN FILES

This one seems obvious, but it’s worth repeating: DON’T CLICK ON SUSPICIOUS EMAILS OR OPEN FILES FROM UNKNOWN SOURCES. Seriously, if you don’t know where it came from, don’t touch it. Your digital privacy is not worth the risk of a mystery email offering you a million dollars from a Nigerian prince.

If you still manage to get yourself into a digital pickle, just send me an email—unless you’re pretending to be a Nigerian prince offering me a fortune. My spam folder is a treasure trove of those! Stay cyber-safe out there!
